Gait Patterns in Snow—a Possible Criterion to Differentiate Sika Deer and Japanese Serow Tracks

چکیده

There is a compelling need to develop user-friendly and sensitive techniques monitor sika deer (Cervus nippon) populations in snowy regions, where initial stages of invasion have been observed. In snow, we can easily detect footsteps terrestrial mammals, which often serve as useful index population size. Here, examined the possibility identifying tracks with similar hoof prints left by two sympatric ungulates, Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus), using gait patterns. We then recorded free-ranging serows on snow following ∼200-km survey routes Tohoku region. successfully patterns 27 34 serows. Our key findings were follows: 1) step width (mean SE, 20.3 ± 0.7 cm) was substantially narrower than that (26.9 0.8 cm); 2) less body size ground conditions for both species; 3) 22.5 cm became an optimal threshold maintain reasonable classification accuracy (> 80%) species. Thus, possible criterion these ungulates.

Overabundance of sika deer and immunocontraception

The impact of deer overabundance is a worldwide problem. Along with habitat expansion and population increase, damage by sika deer to the forest ecosystem and agriculture has become a serious issue in Japan. Deer also transmit a number of diseases and parasites to humans and livestock. The overabundance of deer is a result of their strong fecundity, and therefore the present situation should, i...

Distinct Distribution of Dicrocoelium dendriticum and D. chinensis in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, and a New Final Host Record for D. chinensis

This study dealt with the morphological and molecular identification of Dicrocoelium flukes obtained from Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus) and sika deer (Cervus nippon centralis) in the twelve districts of Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Dicrocoelium dendriticum and D. chinensis were exclusively detected in the western, and coastal and eastern areas of Iwate Prefecture, respectively. This geograph...

Ehrlichia chaffeensis Infection of Sika Deer, Japan

To determine whether Ehrlichia chaffeensis exists in Japan, we used PCR to examine blood from sika deer in Nara, Japan. Of 117 deer, 36 (31%) were infected with E. chaffeensis. The E. chaffeensis 16S rRNA base and GroEL amino acid sequences from Japan were most closely related to those of E. chaffeensis Arkansas.

Possible use of heterospecific food-associated calls of macaques by sika deer for foraging efficiency.

Heterospecific communication signals sometimes convey relevant information for animal survival. For example, animals use or eavesdrop on heterospecific alarm calls concerning common predators. Indeed, most observations have been reported regarding anti-predator strategies. Use of heterospecific signals has rarely been observed as part of a foraging strategy. Here, I report empirical evidence, c...

Cytogenetic variation in farmed stock of Dybowski's sika deer.

The chromosome constitution of Dybowski's sika deer was studied on the basis of 15 samples obtained from farmed stock maintained in an enclosure. The diploid chromosome number was 2n=68, 2n=67 and 2n=66. The constitutive heterochromatin (C-bands) was located in the centromeric regions of all acrocentric chromosomes. Metacentric chromosomes were C-negative. Chromosomes of three pairs proved to b...
